Getting under the covers...
With the sheer amount of hardware inside this behemoth, we were interested to see how everything was cooled. The first thing to notice is the size of the CPU cooler, which runs about two thirds of the way along the back of the chassis.
The FX-60 emits around 120W of heat when operating at full load, so it's no surprise to see such a large chunk of copper dedicated to keeping the chip cool. It's a large two-part copper design with four heatpipes and two fans exhausting warm air out the back of the case.
Also, for any doubters out there, you can just about make out the
ADAFX60 model number on the chip's integrated heatspreader. It's a standard socket 939 desktop FX-60 using AMD's PowerNow! technology. PowerNow! is the mobile version of Cool'n'Quiet - it helps to increase battery life by dynamically adjusting the the clock speed on the chip when more grunt is required.
The GeForce Go 7800 GTX has its own fan, which exhausts air out of the front left hand side of the case, right underneath the 10-in-1 card reader. The two hard drives are stacked on top of each other in a mini hard drive cage - it looks like cool air passes through into the hard drive chamber from the smallest of the five fans on the back of the chassis.
